What we do

Judges and Justices of the Peace of the Court preside over a wide range of legal matters, including adult and youth criminal cases, family law, child welfare, and provincial offences. They provide fair, impartial, and timely decisions while ensuring that court proceedings are conducted with dignity and respect. Through their work, they uphold the principles of justice and help maintain public confidence in the Court system.

Criminal Court

Criminal Court handles cases involving charges under the Criminal Code, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and other federal statutes. These matters may involve adults or youth accused of criminal offences and are heard according to applicable laws and court procedures. The Court ensures that criminal proceedings are conducted fairly, impartially, and with respect for the rights of everyone involved.

Family Court

Family Court handles matters involving child protection, adoption, decision-making responsibility, parenting time, contact, and family support. These cases address important family relationships, responsibilities, and the well-being and safety of children and family members. The Court provides a fair and respectful process to help resolve family-related legal matters and protect the interests of those involved.

Provincial Offences

Provincial Offences Court handles matters involving charges under provincial legislation, municipal by-laws, and other applicable regulations. These cases may include traffic offences, regulatory violations, and other offences established under provincial or municipal law. The Court ensures that proceedings are handled fairly, efficiently, and impartially while respecting the rights of all participants.

Expanded Surety Declaration – Provincial Protocol Effective July 1, 2026

The Ontario Court of Justice is introducing the Expanded Surety Declaration across Ontario, effective July 1, 2026. The new declaration provides the Court with more comprehensive information about proposed sureties and is intended to reduce reliance on viva voce evidence from proposed sureties during bail hearings. The protocol supports a more consistent and efficient approach to bail proceedings across the province.

Amended Jordan-Compliant Trial Scheduling Practice Direction – Effective June 1, 2026

The Ontario Court of Justice has amended its Jordan-Compliant Trial Scheduling Practice Direction, introducing a new Part III that establishes limits on appearances in case management court for criminal matters. Under the amended direction, criminal matters are generally limited to a maximum of three appearances in case management court. The new provision applies to Informations sworn on or after June 1, 2026.
